In particular how important it is to soothe body mind and spirit at the same time; and show your body that you are listening to its pain.
Respond to your pain rather than shutting it out with medication and the mind. While Medication helps let’s minimise it.
Your body HAS to know its being heard to simply survive at a very primitive level.
You will need to be committed to these clubs – it’s so easy to give in and I will keep you on track
During your time with me you will begin to understand what started it all off for you; and hear, at last, this part of you which is crying out for your help and understanding.
We can do this together and supportive groups form as the club meetings progress.
Support each other and I will be there to support this progress.

Tell me more about fibromyalgia, I know it hurts me, but why?
FIBRO – Fibrous connective tissue – tendons/ligaments
MY – Muscles
ALGIA Pain
Can affect up to 3.2 % of the population: approx.7 times more women than men. However there are no routine blood tests or X-rays that show any abnormalities or reason for the pain. Studies show there are three times the levels of the pain transmitting chemical substance P; regardless of the initial trigger. Substance P is released into the spinal cord when a painful trauma is experienced and increases the sensitivity of the nerves. Fibromyalgia sufferers experience a greater level of perceived pain.
Substance P can accumulate and overflow from injured tissue to neighbouring healthy tissues increasing their pain sensitivity as well. It can affect your entire spinal cord and that’s why everyday activity can result in pain and affect how well your muscles work.
Often made worse by;
Changes in the weather
Cold or draughty environments
Hormonal fluctuations (premenstrual and menopausal states)
A stressful situation and on-going stressful situations
Depression
Anxiety and over-exertion
Lack of sleep
Humid weather
Too much of the wrong type of activity can contribute to symptom flare-ups.
Random Pain
Pain can fluctuate even during the day and moves in a random way.
Each of you will experience your pain in a different way due to neuroplasticity = the brain’s ability to form new neural connections throughout our life.
We create different connections according to our experiences throughout life.
Other things about fibromyalgia and its symptoms;
It is believed that sensitisation of the Central nervous system – spinal cord and brain – (CNS) and the presence of intense pain is the root cause of fibromyalgia. The CNS ‘REMEMBERS’ past pain intensity. Enduring pain can create a gradual build up of electrical response and can create an intensity that causes chronic pain. However I believe that emotional causes are just as important.
Permanently tense muscles
Muscles eventually adapt to this cycle and;
- become shorter and more fibrous, less elastic because you’re not using them as much as you used to
- the increased pull on tendons, then ligaments, increase this effect at the muscle spindles which communicate more pain to the brain
Neck Trauma – Is associated with a high risk of developing Fibromyalgia. Whiplash trauma to the dorsal horn can impair the filtering mechanisms and allow the pain processing centres in the CNS to be bombarded with pain messages
Sleep disorders – Most fibromyalgia patients have an associated sleep disorder called the alpha-EEG anomaly. This condition was uncovered in a sleep lab with the aid of a machine that recorded the brain waves of patients during sleep. Researchers found that fibromyalgia syndrome patients could fall asleep without much trouble, but their deep level (or stage 4) sleep was constantly interrupted by bursts of awake-like brain activity. The sleep pattern for clinically depressed patients is distinctly different from that found in Fibromyalgia. Sleep patches are a great support.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Constipation, diarrhoea, frequent abdominal pain, abdominal gas, and nausea represents symptoms frequently found in roughly 40% to 70% of fibromyalgia patients.
Chronic headaches – Recurrent migraine or tension-type headaches are seen in about 50% of fibromyalgia patients and can pose a major problem for you. Self massage is really helpful.
Temporo-mandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome This syndrome, sometimes referred to as TMJD, causes tremendous face and head pain in one quarter of Fibromyalgia patients and more recently a 1997 report indicates that as many as 90% of fibromyalgia patients may have jaw and facial tenderness that could produce, at least intermittently, symptoms of TMJD. Most of the problems associated with this condition are thought to be related to the muscles and ligaments surrounding the joint and not necessarily the joint itself.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome – Sensitivities to odours, noise, bright lights, medications, and various foods are common in roughly 50% of FMS or CFS patients.
Other common symptoms – Painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea), chest pain, morning stiffness, cognitive or memory impairment, numbness, and tingling sensations, muscle twitching, irritable bladder, the feeling of swollen extremities, skin sensitivities, dry eyes and mouth, frequent changes in eye prescription, dizziness, and impaired coordination can occur.
What can I do to ease the pain?
We know from the start of the article, the answer to the question “Can Fybromyalgia be cured?” is no, but we can help. The problems you are experiencing are likely to stem from a problem within more than one system;
- Nervous System
- Hormonal/Emotional System
- Immune System
- Digestive System
- Congestion within your tissues
I can help you develop a picture of what is probably going on – help you understand the problem – then help you find the best ways to help yourself.
Massage and relaxation
Working on tight and congested muscles yourself with self-massage is a good starting point – or come to me for a treatment if you live locally near Malvern or Hereford – followed by self help techniques PLUS the use of the best new NeuroTechnology.
How can relaxation and positive affirmations help?
Positive affirmations along with Mindfulness PLUS a WellBeingBlend work together to help create a positive mindset that has a real physical effect on your actual body – and the pain you are experiencing.
- You are supporting the part of the nervous system which helps you to relax – the opposite of the effect of adrenaline. See my Inner Wellbeing page.
- The nerves which generate the sense of touch can switch off the nerves which generate pain in the brain.
- Self-massage helps you to help yourself.
- You feel able to move forward in a different, more positive direction and you feel more in control of your symptoms.
Understanding your body is the key – the bottom line is your body is crying out for your help.
Your body needs to feel safe with you again. For some reason you have been asking too much of your body and have ignored its first cry for help – which may have been headaches or tummy trouble – then its second cry for help – which may have been anxiety and stress.
The pain you are experiencing now is probably your body’s third cry for help – which you cannot ignore
For your body to heal it has to feel safe in your hands again and TRUST that you are not going to ignore it’s cry for help, again. But WHY did you ignore your body’s cry for help in the first place?
What was more important to you than the needs of your body?
Have you been doing too much knowing that your body was struggling? Why was this OK?
This is the pivotal question which we need to answer for you to Heal
I take the time with my clients to explain how not listening to the body’s cry for help has probably produced their symptoms using easy to understand diagrams and pictures. I help you become more sympathetic and kinder to your body.
Together we will work out the best way for you to help yourself at home and identify constructive ways to approach your health decisions and reduce the worrying and debilitating symptoms you are experiencing.
How can I reduce my medication?
Many of you will have found that medication does not work. However, if you would like to reduce your medication routine we will first look at the medication you currently use and decide how to gradually and responsibly reduce your medication as your pain recedes. Sadly the side effects may be a part of the symptoms you are experiencing.
To answer the question, “Can fibromyalgia be cured?” The answer is definitely NO, however, there is a lot you can do to ease the pain.
