Tell me more about Fibromyalgia. I know it hurts me but why? You may like to join one of my pain clubs FIBRO – Fibrous connective tissue – tendons / ligaments Can affect up to 3.2 % of the population, approx. 7 times more women than men however there are no routine blood tests or X-rays that show any abnormalities or reason for the pain. In research studies there are three times the levels of the pain transmitting chemical substance P; regardless of the initial trigger. Substance P is released into the spinal cord when a painful trauma is experienced and increases the sensitivity of the nerves. A series of messengers are then transmitted, one which informs the brain of the injury. Fibromyalgia sufferers experience a greater level of perceived pain. Substance P can accumulate and overflow from injured tissue to neighbouring healthy tissues which in turn increases their sensitivity to pain. It can pervade the entire spinal cord such that everyday activity can result in pain and then impaired function Aggravating factors – Changes in weather, cold or draughty environments, hormonal fluctuations (premenstrual and menopausal states), stress, depression, anxiety and over-exertion, lack of sleep, humid weather and too much of the wrong type of activity can all contribute to symptom flare-ups. Random Pain Pain can fluctuate even during the course of the day and moves in a random way. Each of you will experience your pain in a different way. |

| You probably know all if this below yet here are more details
It is believed that sensitisation of the Central nervous system – spinal cord and brain – (CNS) and the presence of intense pain is the root cause of fibromyalgia. The CNS ‘REMEMBERS’ past pain intensity. Enduring pain can create a gradual build up of electrical response and can create an intensity that causes chronic pain. Permanently tense muscles Muscles eventually adapt to this cycle and become Neck Trauma – associated with a high risk of developing fibromyalgia. Whiplash trauma to the dorsal horn – important in filtering pain signals to the brain, trauma can impair the filtering mechanisms and allow the pain processing centres in the CNS to be bombarded with pain messages Sleep disorders – Most fibromyalgia patients have an associated sleep disorder called the alpha-EEG anomaly. This condition was uncovered in a sleep lab with the aid of a machine which recorded the brain waves of patients during sleep. Researchers found that fibromyalgia syndrome patients could fall asleep without much trouble, but their deep level (or stage 4) sleep was constantly interrupted by bursts of awake-like brain activity. The sleep pattern for clinically depressed patients is distinctly different from that found in Fibromyalgia.. Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Constipation, diarrhoea, frequent abdominal pain, abdominal gas and nausea represents symptoms frequently found in roughly 40% to 70% of fibromyalgia patients. Chronic headaches – Recurrent migraine or tension-type headaches are seen in about 50% of fibromyalgia patients and can pose as a major problem in coping for this patient group. Temporo-mandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome – This syndrome, sometimes referred to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome – Sensitivities to odours, noise, bright lights, medications and various foods is common in roughly 50% of FMS or CFS patients. Other common symptoms – Painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea), chest pain, morning stiffness, cognitive or memory impairment, numbness and tingling sensations, muscle twitching, irritable bladder, the feeling of swollen extremities, skin sensitivities, dry eyes and mouth, frequent changes in eye prescription, dizziness, and impaired coordination can occur. I am based in the UK in Malvern, Cradley and Hereford, Herefordshire and Worcester is nearby too |
